One of the most common bedtime routines, apart from reading books, is to sing a song to your children. Before becoming a mother, all I know are songs like Row Row Row Your Boat, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and Rock a Bye Baby on a TreeTop but over the years I’ve learned that I actually know more lullabies than I don’t take credit for. We’ve rounded up seven of our favorites to get you started and also in the hopes that our list will inspire you to find your own song for your children.

1 / Lavender’s Dilly Dilly

In full transparency, I’m actually a fan of this Disney movie. I can watch this in the background again and again. I’ve always been a Cinderella fan and watched most of them but this one’s really special to my heart because of this song. It’s the bedtime story that Ella’s mom used to sing to her. It’s something that I always sing to my daughter at bedtime and to my son when he’s resisting sleep.

2 / Soft Kitty

If you are a fan of The Big Bang Theory, you must have come across this song called Soft Kitty that is tied to Sheldon’s, one of the main characters, childhood. It is a song that Sheldon’s Meema or grandmother sings to him for sleep. In one of the early episodes, Sheldon asks friends to sing this song to him when he’s ready to go down to bed especially when he’s sick. The tables were turned when Penny, one of his closest friends and neighbor, asks him for the same song. Bear with me until the end of the video but this duet is really sweet.

Soft Kitty

Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur. Happy kitty, sleepy kitty, purr purr purrrrr~!

3 / You are my Sunshine

Prepare your tissue for this one as even though I didn’t take the broken-hearted version of the original song, this still stings the heart. I started singing this to my daughter when she was three years old and my son who is one. Both of them are instantly drawn to the lyrics and sings this song with us. In fact, our preschooler will sing this to our baby boy all by herself.

4 / Que Sera Sera

Pardon the video but it’s worth posting because it’s a classic. It’s not a top favorite but this Spanish phrase is now embedded in my daughter’s core memory. For obvious reasons, it never comes to mind for me to sing this to my boy but now that this has come to light and for gender equality’s sake, I will try to do it this week.

Que Sera Sera

5 / A Dream is A Wish

Am I remembering it wrongly and thought that this song is from Snow White? But it looks like we have song number two coming from my favorite movie again. The words in lyrics are inspirational as it imparts encouragement so it is quite emotional when you sing this to your children.

A Dream is a Wish

6 / Hush Little Baby

This song is a pleasure to sing as it rhymes well. I think Little Baby Bum has a slightly different and shorter version.

Hush Little Baby

7 / Butterfly, Fly Away

Hannah Montana the TV series might not be my generation but I had related so well with the movie because of it’s country-inspired tunes. In the movie, the song was written by Hannah to her dad for single-handedly raising them. It’s such as sweet father and daughter masterpiece that dads will love.

Butterfly, Fly Away

Pair this with a lovely bedtime story to cap a great bedtime routine.
